Breaking Down Myths About Marketing to Boomers

Published by Global Display Solution on May 15, 2023, 3:15 am

We’re here to set the record straight. There’s been too much false information circulating about promoting and advertising to the older generation. Retailers and store owners think they can only communicate with them through one route, and that’s simply not true. We’re going to break down the myths about marketing to boomers.

They Stick With What They Know

What’s the saying? You can’t teach an old dog new tricks? In some cases, that may be true, but not when it comes to boomers and retail shopping. Boomers are actually a generation that’s open to new things and experiences. Don’t assume they don’t want to branch out because they do.

All you need to do is sell the item as an experience. Show them how it can elevate and alter their current way of living for the better. They are not so loyal to other brands that they’ll refuse to try new things. If another brand has more promising results and is easier to manage, they will give it a try.

They Don’t Mix With Technology

Yes, we’ve heard the rumors too. Boomers repel technology and vice versa. But it’s not true. Technology makes their lives easier. Everything they need is available at the touch of a button; they don’t need to go out of their way to get things done.

Apps deliver groceries, and all their banking information is in one place. Boomers go online as much as millennials and Gen Z. They have social media accounts, read blogs, shop online, and read books on digital devices. Include them in your online marketing endeavors because they will be looking.

They’re No Longer Active

Trust us. Boomers know a body no longer in motion is wasted, and they are not interested in living a dormant lifestyle. Plus, most medical professionals recommend older folks remain active for health benefits. Don’t assume boomers are staying home and doing nothing.

Retirement means they don’t work anymore, not that they stop moving. Older adults still want to get out and be active members of society. Expect to see them inside your store, and be prepared to answer any questions they may have about your products.

They Won’t Spend Any Money

Boomers spend money like everyone else. They can’t survive in this world without spending money. They just might not spend as frivolously as other generations. The things they purchase need to be money well spent.

When they come to shop, they need to know exactly what they’re buying and the cost. Make sure you have some store fixtures and displays around for them to read up on deals and new merchandise.
